March 25th: Tolkien Reading Day
This March 25th is the 76th anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit.  The Tolkien Society invites everyone to discover and enjoy the books written by J.R.R. Tolkien!  If you've seen the movie, you've only experienced a third of the book.
February is Black History Month
Questia, an online source for electronic books, put together a list of its 10 most widely-read African American writers.  At the top of the list are Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, and Toni Morrison.

January is Book Blitz Month
In January, make a point of creating a list of books you want to read, then reserving them with your local public library.  With your library card, you can reserve books online and renew them.  Also, if you have a portable device, you can borrow from their digital library. Also, check out this great video which explains why we need to support our public libraries!
December is Read a New Book Month
With all the rushing and fussing of the holidays, take a minute and start a new book.  You can find new books everywhere, even at your local public library!  For ideas on what to read next, try goodreads.com.  Remember, books make an excellent gift!

November is Picture Book Month
Even in a digital age, the print book is still a tactile, important method for learning how to read for children all over the world.  This month celebrates authors and illustrators of children's picture books.  Become an ambassador!

October is National Book Month
"All you need is an open mind.  And an open book."  The mission of the National Book Awards is to celebrate the best of American literature, to expand its audience, and to enhance the cultural value of good writing in America.  Find out this year's winners by genre.

September is Library Card Sign Up Month
Go to your local library to sign up for a card.  Check out what's available at your town library:

Search by format, keyword, or library.  When you have your own library card, you can request any book you find in the system to be sent to your own town library.
